Does IHOP Take Reservations?
The short answer
IHOP does not take reservations. Seating is first come, first served at effectively every location. Some restaurants offer call-ahead seating, which lets you put your name on the waitlist before you arrive rather than booking a specific time, but this is set per restaurant and is not a chain-wide service. For large parties, calling the restaurant directly in advance is the only reliable approach.

Why IHOP does not take bookings
IHOP operates as a high-turnover family restaurant rather than a reservation-led dining room. Tables are allocated on arrival, which keeps the queue moving during the breakfast and weekend rushes when demand is heaviest. That model is consistent across the chain, so you will not find an online booking system on ihop.com or in the mobile app.
Call-ahead seating, where it exists
Some restaurants operate call-ahead seating. You phone before setting off and the host adds your name to the waitlist, so you arrive partway down the queue rather than at the back. It does not hold a table for you and it is not a reservation. Availability is decided by the individual restaurant, so ring first and ask whether they do it.
Booking for a large group
For a party of eight or more, phone the restaurant a day or two ahead. They cannot guarantee a table at a set time, but they can advise on quieter windows, prepare to push tables together and warn you about anything on the day that would make the visit difficult. For very large groups, ordering Family Feasts or catering to take away is often more practical than seating everyone.
What happens when you arrive
A host takes your name and party size, gives you a rough wait estimate and calls you when a table frees up. Larger parties usually wait longer because the restaurant needs to combine tables, so a group of eight will typically wait longer than four separate pairs. If the wait is quoted at more than twenty minutes and you are not committed to that location, our directory lists nearby alternatives with distances, which is often faster than waiting it out.
When to go if you want to avoid waiting
Weekend mornings between 9 AM and noon are the busiest period at most locations. Mid-afternoon on a weekday is consistently the quietest, which also overlaps with IHOPPY Hour pricing from 2 PM. Late evening is quiet at the 524 restaurants in our directory that run 24 hours, which is worth knowing if you would rather eat breakfast at midnight than queue for it at 10 AM.
Does IHOP Take Reservations? — frequently asked questions
Can you make a reservation at IHOP?
No. IHOP does not accept reservations at any location. Tables are allocated first come, first served when you arrive.
Does IHOP have call-ahead seating?
Some restaurants do. Call-ahead seating puts your name on the waitlist before you arrive so you start partway down the queue, but it does not hold a table and it is not offered everywhere. Phone the restaurant to check.
How do I book IHOP for a large party?
You cannot book, but you should call ahead. Give the restaurant a day or two of notice for a party of eight or more so they can plan table arrangements and suggest a quieter time. For very large groups, a Family Feast or catering order is often easier.
What is the busiest time at IHOP?
Weekend mornings, roughly 9 AM to noon, are the peak. Weekday mid-afternoon is the quietest window, and it overlaps with IHOPPY Hour from 2 PM.
Can I join a waitlist online?
IHOP does not run a chain-wide online waitlist. Some restaurants may use a third-party waitlist tool locally, but the reliable method is to phone the restaurant and ask about call-ahead seating.
Is it worth arriving early to avoid a wait?
Yes on weekends. Arriving before 9 AM usually means walking straight in. If you would rather avoid the question entirely, 524 of the 978 restaurants we track are open 24 hours, and overnight service is rarely busy.
